My top 5 Ice breakers

There are thousands of ice breaker games out there, all you have to do is Google it and away you go. Some games have more than 1 name and have slightly different rules etc. Over the years I think the best games are the ones you have minimal amount of equipment, if any, and you can do at a moments notice. So here are my top 5

1. Ship Shore

Equipment - a line on the floor.

Rules - One side of the line is the ship and the other is the shore and which ever one you call out the group have to then do a 2 footed jump to whichever side you called. Simple. You can make it harder of course, by adding in stricter rules, such as flinching before you've called which side and by having last one to jump the line. Kids and adults love this as it is silly and simple, teenagers can't always see the point in this game.

2. Zen Wrestling

Equipment - none.

Rules - Get the group into pairs and stand one arm length apart, feet together and hands up as if you're about to high five each other. The objective of this game is to put the other person off balance by only touching hands! Best out of 3. Once there is a winner you swap partners as many times as you like and you can have 2 champions wrestle or one person wrestle you to be crowned the winner. This is a great one for teenagers and adults. I would not use this with children as they get too competitive or get a bit silly with it.

3. Swap and balance

Equipment - line on the floor.

Rules - Very simply your group stands on the line and you give them an order to get into, Height, shoe size, birthday month etc with out talking and without coming off the line. You can add different rules like: number of lives, forfeits, only a blindfolded player can talk. This is great for all ages.

4. Group juggle

Equipment - tennis balls (as many as you like)

Rules - Get the group to stand in a circle and tennis ball starts and finishes with you. You have to remember who you passed the ball to and that person can't be beside you or already had the ball. The objective is to get the ball to everyone and back to you with out dropping the ball. Now you can make this harder by adding in more balls, saying the name of the person you're throwing it to as well. You could even review this and see how they can make it faster. I have used this game with all ages but it works really well from teenagers up.

5. Atlas and 3 Q's

Equipment - none.

Rules - Very simply, use the space you have available and name the directions North, South, East & West. Get the group to walk in the direction they were born in, next you are going to give then 3 things to answer and to introduce them self to the group. For an example, Name and where you from, coldest night and why? Proudest moment? Who would you have a conversion with and why? This game is great when no one knows each other especially for adults.

All these games came be done indoors or outside depending on the weather and space. I hope this has given you a few ideas for you to use as ice breakers and if you have any more games to suggest please tell me in the comment section below.
